Spring Is Here, and so are Ticks and Mosquitoes!
Spring is here, and so are ticks and mosquitoes! With our mild winter and early spring, the ticks are out already in high numbers, both deer ticks and wood ticks. Deer ticks carry many diseases, including Lymes, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis. These are serious diseases in dogs, and can be fatal. Start tick prevention now! Products that we recommend and stock include Vectra, Frontline Plus, Advantix II, and the new oral chewable Nexgard. Cats are susceptible to ticks as well, we recommend Easy Spot topical for them.
Mosquitoes are also out early, and adult mosquitoes have survived the mild winter and are already biting and feeding, and their offspring will hatch shortly. Using Heartworm preventatives yearround is recommended, and this year's mils winter demonstrates how little time we have between mosquito seasons here in Minnesota. Heartgard, Iverheart and Iverheart Max are monthly chewable preventatives that we carry and recommend. Also available is the monthly topical medication Bayer Advantage Multi which works well for dogs and cats which don't take oral medications well. Proheart is the heartworm preventative injection for dogs which lasts for 6 months, and eliminates the need to remember monthly pills. Cats are also susceptible to Heartworm Disease, and the disease is untreatable and potentially fatal in cats. Cats should be on heartworm preventative medication also. Feline Heartgard and Bayer Advantage Multi topical both work well in cats.
